psych1There can be times in life when our problems seem overwhelming. Despite the support or good intentions of family or friends, we just don’t seem to be able to overcome difficult emotions or manage our behaviors effectively. At these times a psychologist can help. Individuals may seek psychotherapy for a variety of reasons from coping with major life challenges or childhood trauma to dealing with depression, grief, emotion dysregulation, stress or anxiety.

Psychologists are professionals who have a Masters or Doctorate degree and between 5 to 10 years of advanced training in understanding human emotions and behaviors, as well as learning the most effective methods to bring about healthy change. Through building a relationship of trust and positive, non-judgmental respect, psychologists employ scientifically validated techniques to support you through difficulties and teach you skills to improve your ability to manage future challenges.

What to expect from therapy with a psychologist
psy2The decision to seek psychotherapy is rarely an easy choice. Many people hold misconceptions about therapy and are concerned about the stigma associated with seeking mental health support. However, psychotherapy is nothing to be ashamed of. It is simply a process by which an individual can feel understood and learn new skills that help him or her overcome what was previously an overwhelming obstacle in daily life.

psy3Therapy typically involves private, one hour-long sessions with a psychologist. In most cases individuals meet with the psychologist once a week and are provided exercises to practice or implement throughout the week. A client and therapist may work together for as few as five or six sessions or as long as several years depending on the unique needs and personal goals for therapy.
